The Egg Harbor Township PAL girl's recreation basketball league is for girls that live in Egg Harbor Township

in grades 3rd-high school. This is a recreational league for learning and fun. Win and loss records will not be kept.

Introduction

The P.A.L. Girl’s Basketball League is designed for girls to learn the game of basketball and have fun. We feel P.A.L. Basketball will encourage these girls to develop self-confidence, friendships, teamwork skills, and practice good sporting behavior. Please take the time to look over the following material so that you will have a better understanding of our goals.

League Philosophy

- The league will function as a learning environment. We will stress basic skills of basketball and will not focus on the competition aspect of the game (winning).

- Winning and losing will both be treated as learning experiences. Good sporting behavior and personal discipline will be required of all coaches, players, parents, and spectators attending the game.

- “Playing Time” for each player will not be based on skill level, but instead will be based on attitude, good sportsmanship, punctuality and attendance at team practices and games.

- Skill level of the players for each game will, to a certain extent, determine the strictness or leniency of referee calls. However, this will never allow a team to have an unfair advantage by virtue of the referee. A fair game will still be called based on skill level.

- Spectators and fans are appreciated at all games. However, any unnecessary harassment from the sidelines toward coaches, referees, or players will not be tolerated. We ask that spectators please do not put the league, themselves, and most importantly the girls in any embarrassing positions.

Player/Team Goals

Good Sportsmanship

-Always shake hands with the other team at the end of a game, whether you win or lose.

-Show everyone the same respect that you like to receive. (Including your coach, teammates, the referees, and other teams)

-Follow the rules of basketball as outlined by the league.

Mental/Physical Attitude

-Always keep a positive attitude.

-Bad language, losing your temper, or “pouting” on the court are not acceptable.

-Do your best and give 100% during games and practices.

-Treat winning and losing with the same positive attitude and find something to learn from each situation.

-Players will support each other by using phrases like “nice try” or “good shot.”

-Never say something that might hurt another person’s feelings.

-I know PAL wants good sportsmanship.

-I may be sent to the bench during a game if I need a few minutes to think about my Team Goals.

-I might even be asked to leave a game if it seems I need more time to think about my poor behavior.

-I also know I could be suspended by the Director of PAL and will be required to sit on the bench and encourage my teammates during my suspension to show I want to be a part of P.A.L.

*All players will review the team goals with the help of their coaches and the League Coordinator. Players will also be asked to sign the Team Goals to show their understanding and support.

Parental Code of Conduct

•  Please don’t shout advice to your player during games. Your insightful tips may conflict with the coach’s instruction. Shout encouragement.
•  Please don’t harass the referees. This is a bad habit to get into.
•  Don’t encourage your child to place the blame upon others. One of the benefits of playing sports is learning to accept responsibility instead of making excuses.
•  Please don’t talk bad about the coach in front of your child. Support the coach and stand behind his decisions. If you have a concern with a coach, discuss it with him/her in private.
•  Please don’t “razz” the other team’ players. This is a shameful practice for an adult at a sporting event. Parents who intend to disrupt, distract, or upset players exhibit the worst of poor sportsmanship.
•  Parents, spectators, and children, who are not players, must stay in the stands during all games and practices. P.A.L. volunteers and employees are not there to “baby-sit” your children. If you choose to leave your child unattended you will be charged a $10 per child, per hour babysitting fee.
•  Please do not drop off your child without saying “hello” and “thank you” to your child’s volunteer coach.
•  Please pick your child up on time.
•  As a parent, be involved in a positive way. Attend your child’s games as often as you can. Cheer for all the kids on the team. If you are not sure how you can help, ask the coach.

A Note about our referees

Our referees are all volunteers and it’s a tough job! Please remember that it is their job to control the game and monitor the mood on the court, not enforce every rule in the book. To help with the learning experience, when a call is made, the referee may explain the violation to the players. (This may happen early in the season or with our younger players.) Depending on the skill level of the girls, the referee may be more lenient on double dribbling or traveling. They will not make calls to favor one team over the other. The bottom line is, the referee’s call stands. Coaches, players, and spectators need to respect that. Coaches will constantly be reminding players to focus on their own skill-building and good sporting behavior, not the refereeing calls or the other team.

*I understand if I am asked to leave a game by the League Coordinator because of a grand display of poor behavior, I must take my child/player with me. My child will be permitted to play in the following game, because PAL will not further punish the player for my actions. I will not be able to return until the Director of PAL has spoken with me about my behavior.

**All parents will be asked to sign a Parental Code of Conduct form.

COACH’S CODE OF ETHICS

It shall be the duty of each coach to:

•  Comply with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League. Respect all employees and volunteers involved in the program. Remember that each coach is a representative of the Police Athletic League.

•  Remember to encourage and compliment players when they show improvement, play with extra effort, or simply need kind words. Do not criticize players in front of spectators or other players. Criticism should be constructive in nature.

•  Not allow a player to enter or re-enter a game if there is any doubt as to the seriousness of an injury.

•  Exhibit good sportsmanship by refraining from rude or abusive language, actions, or gestures.

•  Encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating, at every game and practice, respect and positive support for all players, coaches, officials, staff, and other spectators.

•  Accept decisions of officials as being fair and performed to the best of their ability. A coach will never go onto the court when a game is in progress to dispute a call. Any questions or rule interpretations should be handled during time-outs, halftime, or after the game.

•  Demonstrate dignity in winning or in losing, recognizing that both offer opportunities for the personal growth of our youth participants.

•  ** Be responsible for ensuring that players on his/her team and team spectators are aware of their codes of conduct.

•  Remember, these are young athletes who are still learning; encourage and compliment any player who displays effort, good sportsmanship, or improved play.

*All coaches will be asked to sign a Coach’s Code of Ethics for the P.A.L. Girl’s Basketball Program.
